The principle and application of bone conduction

1.What is bone conduction?
The essence of sound is vibration, and the conduction of sound in the body is divided into two types, air conduction and bone conduction.
Normally, hearing is produced by sound waves passing through the external auditory canal to cause the tympanic membrane to vibrate and then enter the cochlea. This pathway is called air conduction.
Another way is to transmit sound through the bones in a way called bone conduction. We usually listen to our own speech, mainly relying on bone conduction. Vibrations from the vocal cords travel through the teeth, gums, and bones such as the upper and lower jaws to reach our inner ear.

Generally speaking, bone conduction products are divided into bone conduction receivers and bone conduction transmitters.

2. What are the characteristics of bone conduction products?
1) Bone conduction receiver
■ Freeing both ears, the two ears are completely free, and the sound around the bone conduction device can still be heard, suitable for outdoor sports enthusiasts, and can have conversations or listen to music at the same time.
■Wearing for a long time can protect hearing function from damage.
■Ensure the privacy of calls and reduce external leaking sound, which can be beneficial to use in special environments such as battlefields and rescues.
■It is not limited by physiological conditions and is effective for hearing impaired persons (hearing impairment caused by the sound transmission system from the outer ear to the middle ear).
2) Bone conduction microphone
■No sound inlet hole (this point is different from the air conduction microphone), fully sealed structure, the product is firm and reliable, well-made, and has good shock resistance.
■Waterproof. Not only can it be used in general humid environment, but also can be used underwater, especially suitable for divers, underwater operators, etc.
■ Windproof. High-altitude operations and high-altitude operations are often accompanied by strong winds. Using bone conduction microphones in this environment can prevent communication from being affected by strong winds.
■ Fire and high temperature smoke prevention. The air conduction microphone is easy to be damaged and lose its function when used under high temperature conditions.
■ anti-low temperature performance. Air conduction microphones are used at -40℃ for a long time. Under the influence of low temperature, their devices are easily damaged, thus affecting product performance. Bone conduction microphones are used in ultra-low temperature environment, which just shows their good transmission performance.
■Dustproof. If the air-conducted microphone is used for a long time in workshops and factories with a lot of particulate matter, it is easy to block the sound inlet hole, which will affect the transmission effect. The bone conduction microphone avoids this situation, and is especially suitable for underground or open-air operators in textile workshops, metal and non-metal mines, and coal mines.
■Anti-noise. This is the most important feature of the bone conduction microphone. In addition to the above 6 advantages, the bone conduction microphone has a natural anti-noise effect when used in any environment. It only picks up the sound transmitted by the bone vibration, and naturally filters out the noise from the surrounding, thus ensuring Clear call effect. It can be applied to tours and introductions of large and noisy production workshops, battlefields full of artillery fire, and earthquake prevention and disaster relief operations.
3. Application areas
1) Special industries such as military, police, security, and fire protection systems
2) Large and noisy industrial sites, mines, oil wells and other places
3) Other broad application fields
