1. Bluetooth 5.0 introduces two new modes: High Speed and Long Range
In Bluetooth version 5.0, two new modes were introduced (each using a new PHY): high-speed mode (2M PHY) and long-range mode (coded PHY).
*PHY refers to the physical layer, the bottom layer of OSI. Generally refers to the chip that interfaces with external signals.
2. Bluetooth Low Energy can achieve throughput up to 1.4 Mbps:
Through the introduction of 2M PHY in Bluetooth 5.0, throughput of up to 1.4 Mbps can be achieved. If a standard 1M PHY is used, the maximum user data throughput is about 700 kbps. The reason the throughput is not 2M or 1M is that the packets include header overhead and gaps between packets, thus reducing the data throughput at the user level.
3. By 2024, 100% of smartphones, laptops and tablets shipped will support both Bluetooth Low Energy and Bluetooth Classic.
According to the latest Bluetooth market report, by 2024, 100% of all new platform devices will support Bluetooth Classic + LE.
4. Many new features introduced in the new version of Bluetooth are optional
When looking for a Bluetooth Low Energy chipset, it’s important to keep in mind that the advertised version of Bluetooth that the chipset supports does not necessarily imply support for that version’s specific features. For example, both 2M PHY and Coded PHY are optional features of Bluetooth 5.0, so make sure you research the datasheet and specs of your chosen Bluetooth Low Energy chipset to make sure it supports the Bluetooth features you are interested in
